Why are female surveillance operatives in such demand?

Within the Private Investigation industry there are very few female surveillance operatives. Why is this the case I hear you ask? The answer to this we don’t know, however we can confirm that they are much needed. There are many reasons why women are required to deploy on private investigation tasks. Firstly, surveillance requires a minimum of two surveillance operatives, and it is much more inconspicuous to have a male and a female deployed together instead of two males. If, for example, the surveillance team are required to enter a restaurant environment, or a bar/ nightclub it would appear less conspicuous to pose as a couple as opposed to two males.

Another reason is that women are generally less imposing and because women form a very small percentage of surveillance operatives, they are generally not stereotypically labelled as surveillance operatives. Female surveillance operatives are generally very good at changing their profile. For example, a female will look very different with their hair down to when it is tied up, or wearing headgear, or even a wig. Yes, a male could don headgear and potentially a wig, however a female’s description is changed much greater in these circumstances.
Females can however have drawbacks. For example, if a female operative is particularly attractive, then they may be remembered by the subject of the enquiry and the operative will need to manage their exposure levels. In general, female operatives are an important asset.
How do I become a female surveillance operative?
Titan is an established operational investigation agency predominantly, however in 2017 when we outgrew our current operational resourcing structure we had to look elsewhere. We initially looked at surveillance training providers with a view to utilising their successful graduates. This fell at the first hurdle though when we observed and witnessed first-hand the poor standard of training and how unwell equipped they were. This in the main was most likely due to the training provider and instruction team not having a credible background in surveillance. So, in 2017, we decided to design and roll out our own surveillance training programme based upon our Police operational surveillance experience and Police surveillance instructor background. Clearly a credible background.
Titan’s instructor team has 77 years of Police service as operational surveillance experience and as surveillance trainers.
Titan’s five-day surveillance course was designed around the Police six-week surveillance course, but only with the content that is relevant to the private investigation industry.
Female Surveillance Operatives Training Course
In 2020, we teamed up with the Institute of Professional Investigators and commenced delivering the five-day surveillance course as a certificated RQF Level 4 in Covert Surveillance Operations. We deliver the course syllabus which wasn’t developed by us, and we feel that it isn’t comprehensive enough to prepare a learner for the operational rigours of the surveillance industry. We therefore deliver much more than the required syllabus.
The course format is as follows:
- Day 1 – Foot surveillance
- Day 2 – Public transport
- Day 3 – Mobile surveillance
- Day 4 – Mobile surveillance combined with foot surveillance
- Day 5 – Final exercise
The course costs £1200 inclusive of VAT and is delivered from our Derby training facility in the Midlands.
