The Role of the Surveillance Motorcyclist
The surveillance motorcyclist role is a specialist role which is a transition that occurs to experienced, confident surveillance operatives. It is not an entry level role. Similar to other specialist roles such as CROP (Covert Rural Observation Post).
So, What Is The Role Of A Surveillance Motorcyclist?
The surveillance motorcyclist is to be used as a last resort to prevent a loss of the subject vehicle. The motorcycle is able to cover ground a lot quicker than a vehicle, able to make ground through traffic quicker, filter through traffic or even able to pass between two lorries on a dual carriageway to gain the visual on the subject vehicle again. The surveillance motorcycle will be moving up and down the surveillance team like a yo-yo reacting to the commentary and pre-empting the need for them to be utilised. It’s a thankless task if you’re not actually used all day but one that is immensely tiring due to the concentration required.
It is a dangerous role due to the position on a road where a surveillance motorcyclist rides, usually covertly in the gutter and close to vehicles for cover and lights extinguished. This is the opposite to how a motorcyclist should ride to be seen by other road users. Many surveillance motorcyclists have been involved in accidents and even fatalities, however the greatest risk to them is their own team.
I was a Police Surveillance Motorcyclist for many years and luckily lived to tell the tale but had many near misses which were usually due to my own team acting erratically on losses and not performing shoulder checks before manoeuvring.
In the private surveillance industry, there is a distinct lack of surveillance motorcyclists and as a result Titan is planning to fulfil the shortfall by passing on our many years of operational experience as surveillance motorcyclists and delivering training courses. This course runs in tandem with Titan’s 5-Day Surveillance Course, so both the learner surveillance motorcyclists and the intermediate learners get to experience working with a motorcycle within the convoy. The course requires a maximum of two learner motorcyclists to run, is five days in duration and is delivered from our Derby training facility. The rider ability is required to be confident, safe and come naturally so that the learner isn’t having to think about riding as well as the new alien surveillance skills being taught.
If you have a minimum of two years surveillance experience and would like to be trained as a surveillance motorcyclist, then please contact the training team.
Successful learners who complete Titan’s 5-Day Surveillance Motorcycle Course will be enrolled into the Titan GROW student aftercare programme. As part of this programme learners are given access to the Titan Operational Resourcing Group, which is where operational deployments are advertised. Titan places all of its operational work on here, however so do just shy of 300 other members who are sole traders/ company owners, which makes it a busy group with lots of work opportunities.
If you are an experienced surveillance motorcyclist, then we would like to hear from you for our future operational deployments.
