I’m your host, Simon Henson, Managing Director of Titan Private Investigation Ltd. Today, we’re diving into an essential topic for surveillance professionals and trainees alike: motorcycle vehicle checks. These checks are crucial, especially during the mobile surveillance phase of our training courses, ensuring your vehicle is ready for high-demand operations.
The Importance of Vehicle Checks
Surveillance motorcycles are often pushed to their limits, and any mechanical issue could have catastrophic consequences. A quick five-minute check can save you from potential breakdowns or safety hazards. At Titan, we teach all our trainees to perform these checks using the mnemonic POWDERY:
- P: Petrol
- O: Oil
- W: Water
- D: Damage, Drive Chain or Drive Shaft
- E: Electrics
- R: Rubber (tyres)
- Y: You
Advanced police drivers add two S’s: Steering and Suspension.
POWDERY in Detail
- Petrol:
Ensure your tank is full, especially before a surveillance operation. Use your gauge or physically check the tank. Running out of fuel during a mission could disrupt the operation and compromise your team. - Oil:
Check the oil level using the gauge or dipstick. Perform this check with the bike upright, and always ensure there’s enough oil before starting the engine to avoid damage. - Water:
Inspect the water reservoir, typically located at the back or within the housing. Use a torch if necessary to confirm the coolant level is sufficient. - Damage, Drive Chain, or Drive Shaft:
Walk around the bike to check for visible damage to mirrors, pegs, or throttles. Inspect the drive chain for slack or the drive shaft for proper housing integrity. - Electrics:
Test all lights, indicators, and other electrical components to confirm they are functioning correctly. - Rubber (Tyres):
Ensure the tyres have sufficient tread and are inflated to the correct pressure. Look for any signs of wear or damage. - You:
Lastly, check yourself. Are you fit, alert, and prepared for the task ahead? Proper hydration, nutrition, and focus are vital for any surveillance operation.
Why Checks Matter
These checks ensure not just your safety but the success of your mission. Whether you’re following a subject across town or engaging in extended surveillance, a well-maintained motorcycle is critical.
