Day 3 & 4 – Titan Surveillance Training Course Part 1
Welcome back to Titan PI TV, your ultimate destination for exclusive insights into the world of professional private investigation, hosted by Simon Henson. In this exciting episode, we continue our coverage of Titan’s RQF Certified 5-Day Surveillance Training Course, taking an in-depth look at Days 3 and 4, where the focus shifts to vehicle and mobile surveillance in both urban and motorway environments.
Shot on location in Derby, the Leicester Forest East Services (M1 Motorway), and Lutterworth Town Centre, this episode captures the intensity and complexity of real-world training scenarios designed to equip trainees with the skills needed to operate effectively in high-pressure situations.
What’s Covered in Days 3 & 4?
The training evolves significantly as the students move from foot surveillance to the challenging dynamics of mobile surveillance operations, testing their observational, decision-making, and teamwork skills in diverse environments.
Highlights of the Episode
Day 3: Introduction to Vehicle Surveillance
The transition to vehicle-based surveillance starts on Day 3, as trainees get to grips with the core principles and tactics of operating in a mobile surveillance unit.
- Principles of Vehicle Surveillance
Simon Henson and the Titan instructors introduce trainees to the foundations of vehicle-based observation, including:- Maintaining covert distance: Following without being detected while ensuring the subject remains in sight.
- Route anticipation: Predicting a subject’s movements to stay ahead of the operation.
- Effective positioning: Learning where to position their vehicles to maximise observation opportunities.
- Working in a Convoy
Trainees practise working in two- and three-car teams, coordinating movements and handovers seamlessly to maintain continuous surveillance on the subject without arousing suspicion. - Urban Environments
In the heart of Derby, trainees tackle the challenges of vehicle surveillance in busy city streets, navigating one-way systems, pedestrian crossings, and unpredictable traffic conditions.
Day 4: Motorway & Rural Surveillance
The pace intensifies on Day 4 as trainees venture out onto the motorways and rural roads, encountering new challenges and learning advanced tactics.
- High-Speed Surveillance on Motorways
Filmed at the Leicester Forest East Services (M1 Motorway), this segment explores:- Managing speeds safely while maintaining line of sight.
- Dealing with motorway exits and junctions.
- Effective communication protocols to ensure smooth transitions between vehicles when navigating high-speed roads.
- Rural Road Surveillance
Moving to Lutterworth Town Centre and its surrounding rural roads, the episode dives into:- Maintaining discretion in quieter, open areas with less cover.
- Adapting to the unique challenges of surveillance in rural environments, where routes may be less predictable, and subject movements harder to anticipate.
- Using Service Areas
Service stations, such as the Leicester Forest East Services, provide unique challenges and opportunities. Trainees learn:- How to use service stations as observation points without being noticed.
- Managing vehicle swaps and maintaining the cocooning technique when subjects stop to refuel or rest.
Trainees in Action: Real-Time Challenges
Throughout Days 3 and 4, trainees are put to the test in realistic scenarios, simulating actual surveillance deployments. They must:
- Apply the skills learned in the classroom to live-action situations.
- Work as a team to ensure seamless communication and coordination between vehicles.
- Face unexpected situations, such as losing the subject, and practise using Titan’s HELP methodology to recover effectively:
- H – Honesty
- E – Early Call
- L – Location
- P – Procedure
The hands-on approach ensures that each participant gains the confidence and expertise required to excel in professional surveillance operations.
