Corporate Employee Absenteeism: Does your company have a culture of absenteeism?
Corporate Employee Absenteeism: Does your business have a culture of sickness and absenteeism or are you worried that one may emerge?
The cost of absenteeism to the UK economy between January and November 2021 was estimated at £43 billion, an increase of 31%.
During the Pandemic Titan Private Investigation Limited has been involved in countless fraudulent absenteeism cases. Whether it was false COVID cases, exaggerating the effects of a work-based accident or working elsewhere and submitting sick notes from a GP, we have seen it all. Whether it was false COVID cases, exaggerating the effects of a work-based accident or working elsewhere and submitting sick notes from a GP, we have seen it all. One employee we investigated was either on the golf course each day or in the gym!
Titan’s operatives have the kit on board their vehicles to cater for every eventuality, whether that be GPS vehicle trackers, eavesdrop devices or remote cameras and covert cameras. Titan’s operatives have the kit on board their vehicles to cater for every eventuality, whether that be GPS vehicle trackers, remote cameras or covert cameras. This enables our operatives to gain irrefutable evidence during the operational deployment.
How do Titan conduct corporate surveillance deployments?
We deploy 2-3 surveillance operatives to covertly monitor and record the subject’s movements for a minimum of five hours at a time. Most corporate clients however request a full eight-hour deployment. Our corporate clients are allocated a case manager and are updated live with developments throughout the deployment. The option to extend hour by hour is also available if the customer wants to extend the deployment due to the subject’s movement. Titan’s analysts then carefully study the surveillance footage and prepare a comprehensive evidential report. The report includes images taken from the surveillance footage. This report is fully admissible in a tribunal, civil or criminal court. All of our evidence gathering techniques are lawful and therefore are watertight and stand scrutiny and integrity.
One corporate case this year saved a business six figures by utilising Titan to investigate an employee. Our evidence was utilised by the company and solicitors to find the employee guilty of gross misconduct and removed from the company. Another corporate investigation was to investigate and make an example of an employee who was exaggerating the effects of a work based accident to deter other members of the workforce from doing similar. This nipped a culture of absenteeism within the company in the bud and saved the company a hefty civil litigation pay out. Another case found that a staff member was working during the day for our client, but he was also working a night shift as a taxi driver. This was the cause of his poor performance during the day and high absenteeism record.
Other investigations have discovered falsified mileage expenses and theft.
Corporate investigations can gain all the evidence required in just one operational deployment; however others may be more protracted.
Employee Absenteeism Hurts Your Business
- It’s costly.
Most organisations assume that paying for holidays and sick time is simply one of the costs of doing business. However, even routine employee absences carry hidden costs. Replacement workers and overtime charges raise costs and heavier workloads for workers who are present and can disrupt daily routines and increase employee stress.
- It lowers productivity.
Across the board, replacement workers are less productive in all cases of employee absence. The Mercer study found that when unplanned absences occur, replacement workers are only 71% as efficient, while planned absences are 79% as efficient. Absent workers may slow down work output and other processes, cause meetings to be postponed and create delays in key project steps.
- It impacts engagement.
One of the hidden costs of absence is the effect it has on other employees. The additional workload, the inconvenience of having to work extra shifts and the possibility that they might know that co-workers are not really ill. This is inevitably going to have a negative effect on employees.
- It can increase compliance risks.
Managing different forms of absence and allowances, especially in organisations with workers’ councils, is complex. Adding to the challenge are government and local leave laws like the European Working Time Directive. Under penalty of noncompliance, organisations must sort out the overlapping provisions of these regulations and internal policies. Failure to accurately track and enforce employee absence policies can result in costly regulatory violations and employee grievances.
