Can I become a motorcycle surveillance operative without being surveillance trained first?
This is a common question our training team are asked when learners ring Titan in regard to training enquiries.
The answer is No, and we will explain why in this short newsfeed. The role of a surveillance motorcyclist is a specialist role and one that requires the learner to be competent in surveillance already. Not only in surveillance but also their riding ability. The reason for this is that the role is a particularly dangerous one and requires the rider/ learner to know what the surveillance team around them will be doing in certain circumstances, such as a loss, but also for the surveillance to come as a second nature. If the learner isn’t familiar with surveillance then they are at risk of holding your surveillance team up, or not being in a position when required or worst still, being knocked off by your team. The biggest risk to a surveillance motorcyclist is their surveillance team.
So, in short, before a surveillance motorcyclist can be trained in this role, they will need to have at least two years of conventional surveillance experience in vehicles and at least two years of motorcycle riding experience.
So what does the surveillance motorcycle course syllabus look like?
The course is a five-day course and runs in tandem with our conventional five-day surveillance course. This gives the surveillance motorcyclists the opportunity to learn their new role for the first two days and then work as part of a full surveillance team for the remaining three days. This is a valuable experience as it provides the learner with not only the skills but also the experience.
Day 1
- Check ride and rider assessment
Day 2
- Changing of rider appearance
- The 3 surveillance motorcyclist commands
- Use of cover
- The convoy system
- Loss procedures and roles

Day 3
- Join the surveillance team
- Stop and plot
- Conventional surveillance with three vehicles and a motorcycle
Day 4

- Motorway surveillance
Day 5

Who would benefit from Titan’s specialist motorcycle course?

- Those who have been previously trained as a specialist surveillance motorcyclist and require a refresher.
- Former government surveillance motorcyclists who wish to transition into the private surveillance industry.
